  • PURPOSES : Before-and-after studies of red light cameras were conducted with the aim of reducing the number of side right-angle collisions. Three different methods were used for the before-and-after studies, and the analysis results were compared. METHODS : This research used the naive before-and-after method, the comparison-group method, and the empirical Bayes method to study the effects of red light cameras on side-angle collisions. The results of the three before-and-after methods were compared and interpreted in terms of safety indications at signalized intersections. RESULTS : The research results showed that side right-angle collisions can be reduced by installing red light cameras at signalized intersections. All three methods guarantee safety improvements of 25~30% on average. With regard to the results of each method, the naive before-and-after method, the comparison-group method, and the empirical Bayes method showed safety improvements of 25.6%, 27.8%, and 29.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that red light cameras are an effective countermeasure to improve intersection safety. In particular, by installing red light cameras, side right-angle collisions can be reduced by up to approximately 25~30%.

  • In this paper, we improved the light extraction efficiency by structural change of LEDs on conventional LEDs. We simulated the LEDs light emission as functions of LED side wall angle, various refractive indices the geometrical structures and analyzed the condition improved the light efficiency. We present the results of experimerns and simulations for light output power from LEDs for various refractive indices and the geometrical structures of the LED encapsulants. When the side wall angle range was from 40[$^{\circ}$] to 30[$^{\circ}$], the LED emission increased. LED side wall angle onto LED using the simulation system with a fine tuning of the structure of the LEDs side wall angle is fabricated. Additionally, we changed the side wall angle of LED package with spherical structure and flat structure. The result of spherical structure ray tracting is higher compared with flat structure about 14[%].

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of occlusal contact under the fixed implant prosthesis of partially edentulous patients which was hased on occlusal concept of implant prosthesis. From the patients who have free-standing implant supported prosthesis of unilateral partially edentulous area, occlusal and occlusal contact point of th enatural tooth side and implant side of light closure and heavy closure were analyzed by T-scan system throuht pre-and post-adjustment and the degree of occlusal contact was estimated by Shimstock. The following results were obtained : 1. The occlusal force of natural tooth side(NF) from mid-sagittal axis was relatively constant at light and heavy closure through pre-and post-adjustment, but the occlusal force of implant side(IF) was decreased significantly at light closure(P<0.01) and heavy closure(P<0.05) of post-adjustment. 2. Natural tooth side-implant side moment(MIMoment) fo occlusal force from mid-sagittal axis was significant(p<0.05) through pre-and post-adjustment and the deviation from mid-sagittal axis was increased at light closure of post-adjustment, but was decreased at heavy closure of post-adjustment. 3. Comparing the NF and IF, IF was greater at heavy closure of pre-adjustment, and NF was greater at light closure of post-adjustment, and the NF and IF was relatively equally distributed at light closure of pre-adjustment and at heavy closure of post-adjustment. 4. The number of occlusal contact point of natural tooth side(NC) was relatively constant through pre-and post-adjustment, but the number of occlusal contact point of implant side(IC) was significantly decreased(P<0.05) at light closure of post-adjustment, and was not significant but was lesser at heavy closure of post-adjustment. 5. Difference of the NC and IC was greater at light closure of post-adjustment, but it was less at heavy closure of post-adjustment, and therefore occlusal contact point of natural tooth side and implant side was relatively equally distributed at heavy closure of postadjustment. 6. When bilaterally distribution of occlusal force and occlusal contact point was established, degree of occlusal contact of implant suporoted prosthesis with opoosing teeth at light clousre was $34.13{\pm}21.69{\mu}m$.

  • To study the influence of light intensity on blind-side hypermelanosis of starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus, we compared growth, glucose, cortisol, ratio of malpigmented blind-side area, ambicolored fish ratio and expression of mch mRNA for 60 days in 0 lux(darkness) and 20 lux(low light density). The test was done in duplicate at 50 fish/tank with the selected ordinary juvenile flounder. The rearing was performed in FRP aquarium tanks ($H100cm{\times}L100cm{\times}W100cm$). Growth was higher in the 0 lux. The ratio of malpigmented blind-side area and ambicolored fish ratio were significantly higher at the 0 lux than at the 20 lux. The result suggests that 20 lux could inhibit the hypermelanosis. The expression level of MCH 1, 2 mRNA was significantly lower in 0 lux, indicating that MCH 1, 2 and light intensity are related to blind-side hypermelanosis of starry flounder.

  • A new PLF-BLU (Plastic Light Fiber-Back Light Unit) using side glowing light fiber rods array for the 42" LCD TV display has been evelopedd. The light fibers were 14mm in diameter and 50cm long pure transparent acrylic rods of 1.49 refractive index. Fine seratees were made on the flat side of rod. extremely bright incandscent light from lamp fed into the fiber si scattered at scratches then emerges through the surface of rod. A typical PLF-BLU system consists of 24 PLFs produced side glow of brightness of 4,500cd/㎡ to 6,500cd/㎡. New PLF-BLU is proved to be a BLU of rigid, bright, no heat generation, and low power consumption, hence a prospective BLU system for very and/or ultra large size TVs. A new LED-PLF-BLU system considered to be a revolutionary to break-through of the BLU technologies has also been developed, and is decribed briefly.

  • The spectra of scattering light fromlaser-produced plasma near its fundamental and second harmonic wavelength were observed respectively by means of spectroscopic technique. The experimental results and the generation mechanism of nonlinear effects such as the second garmonics and the brillouin scattering were analysed theoretically. The spectra of reflected laser light became wider than that of incident laser light. And the peak of spectrum of reflected light shifted to red-side from that of incident light. The second harmonic light is generated from the nonlinear interaction of the incident laser light and the electron plasma wave excited in resonance region by the oblique incidence of laser light to the plasma. The Brillouin backscattering from laser-produced plasmas of hydrogen and deuterium has shown an isotope effect in the red-side region of the generated second harmonic light. This isotope shift is explained by the parametric instability at the cutoff (resonance) region using frequency-and phase-matching conditions of the waves.

  • This study investigates the optical characteristics of InGaN multiple quantum wells(MQWs) light emitting diodes(LEDs) on planar sapphire substrates(PSSs), nano-sized PSS(NPSS) and micro-sized PSS(MPSS). We obtain the results as the patterning size of the sapphire substrates approach the nanometer scale: The light from the back side of the device increases and the total light extraction becomes larger than the MPSS- and planar-LEDs. The experiment is conducted by Monte Carlo ray-tracing, which is regarded as one of the most suitable ways to simulate light propagation in LEDs. The results show fine consistency between simulation and measurement of the samples with different sized patterned substrates. Notably, light from the back side becomes larger in the NPSS LEDs. We strongly propose that the increase in the light intensity of NPSS LEDs is due to an abnormal optical distribution, which indicates an increase of extraction probability through NPSS.

  • A theoretical presentation by using a three-dimensional finite difference beam propagating method (3-D FD-BPM) for the evanescent coupling is offered with respect to the refractive indexes between a side-polished optical fiber and an infinitely planar waveguide with a conductor cladding (PWGCC). The PWG is suspended at a constant distance from an unclad fiber core and attached with a perfect conductor (PEC) on one side. The coupling and propagation of light are found to depend on both the relationship between the refractive index values of two structures and the configuration of the side-polished fiber used in the PWGCC. The spreading of light in the unconfined direction of a PWGCC is presented with the distribution of electric fields in xy - plane and the absolute amplitude of electric fields along the x and y axis. The power of the light propagation in a fiber decreases exponentially along the fiber axis as it is transferred to the PWGCC, where it is carried away.

  • We have developed a probe for measuring the light levels inside illuminated fruit. The probe has minimal effect on the light levels being measured and enables the sampling of the light flux at any point within the fruit. We present experimental light extinction rates within apple, nashi, kiwifruit, and mandarin fruit. Moving from the illuminated side to the far side of the fruit, the extinction level follows an initial power law decay as the light diffuses into the fruit then reduces to an exponential decay through the rest of the fruit. Significant variations in the rates of light extinction are found in the core, skin and differing flesh regions. Monte Carlo simulations of the light distribution in fruit, which use scattering and absorption coefficients for the diffusely scattering tissue, and boundary conditions for the skin effects, produce results that follow the experimental results closely.
