Maximum a posteriori estimation based wind fragility analysis with application to existing linear or hysteretic shear frames

  • Wind fragility analysis provides a quantitative instrument for delineating the safety performance of civil structures under hazardous wind loading conditions such as cyclones and tornados. It has attracted and would be expected to continue to attract intensive research spotlight particularly in the nowadays worldwide context of adapting to the changing climate. One of the challenges encumbering efficacious assessment of the safety performance of existing civil structures is the possible incompleteness of the structural appraisal data. Addressing the issue of the data missingness, the study presented in this paper forms a first attempt to investigate the feasibility of using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm and Bayesian techniques to predict the wind fragilities of existing civil structures. Numerical examples of typical linear or hysteretic shear frames are introduced with the wind loads derived from a widely used power spectral density function. Specifically, the application of the maximum a posteriori estimates of the distribution parameters for the story stiffness is examined, and a surrogate model is developed and applied to facilitate the nonlinear response computation when studying the fragilities of the hysteretic shear frame involved.

Maximum A Posteriori Estimation-based Adaptive Search Range Decision for Accelerating HEVC Motion Estimation on GPU

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) suffers from high computational complexity due to its quad-tree structure in motion estimation (ME). This paper exposes an adaptive search range decision algorithm for accelerating HEVC integer-pel ME on GPU which estimates the optimal search range (SR) using a MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) estimator. There are three main contributions; First, we define the motion feature as the standard deviation of motion vector difference values in a CTU. Second, a MAP estimator is proposed, which theoretically estimates the motion feature of the current CTU using the motion feature of a temporally adjacent CTU and its SR without any data dependency. Thus, the SR for the current CTU is parallelly determined. Finally, the values of the prior distribution and the likelihood for each discretized motion feature are computed in advance and stored at a look-up table to further save the computational complexity. Experimental results show in conventional HEVC test sequences that the proposed algorithm can achieves high average time reductions without any subjective quality loss as well as with little BD-bitrate increase.

  • In this paper, we investigated baseline estimation methods for remove background noise using Raman spectra from acute alcohol liver injury and acute ethanol-induced chronic liver fibrosis. Far the baseline estimation, we applied first derivative, linear programming and rolling ball method. Optimal input parameter of each method were determined by the training rate of MAP (maximum a posteriori probability) classifier. According to the experimental results, classification results baseline estimation with the rolling ball algorithm gave about 89.4%, which is very promising results for classification of acute alcohol liver injury and acute ethanol-induced chronic liver fibrosis. From these results, to determined the appropriate methods and parameters of baseline estimation impact on classification performance was confirmed.

  • In digital mobile communication system, the transmission errors affect the quality of output speech seriously. There are many error concealment techniques using a posteriori probability which provides information about any transmitted parameter. They need knowledge about channel transition probability as well as the 1st order Markov transition probability of codec parameters for estimation of transmitted parameters. However, in applications of mobile communication systems, the channel transition probability varies depending on nonstationary channel characteristics. The mismatch of designed channel transition probability of the estimator to actual channel transition probability degrades the performance of the estimator. In this paper, we proposed a new parameter estimator which adapts to the channel characteristics using short time average of maximum a posteriori probabilities(MAPs). The proposed scheme, when applied to the LSP parameter estimation, performed better than the conventional estimator which do not adapt to the channel characteristics.

  • This paper Presents a new self-adaptation algorithm based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) eigenvoice for Korean connected digit recognition. The proposed MAP eigenvoice is developed by introducing a probability density model for the eigenvoice coefficients. The Proposed approach provides a unified framework that incorporates the Prior model into the conventional eigenvoice estimation. In self-adaptation system we use only one adaptation utterance that will be recognized, we use MAP eigenvoice that is most robust adaptation. In series of self-adaptation experiments on the Korean connected digit recognition task. we demonstrate that the performance of the proposed approach is better than that of the conventional eigenvoice algorithm for a small amount of adaptation data.

  • In this paper amplitude and phase distortion of the received signal through a fading channel results in a severe performance degradation of the communication system, Therefore we consider the variance of the maximum a posteriori phase estimate of sinusoidal signal by the Cramer-Rao bound in wireless fading channel. To find the Cramer-Rao lower bound for the variance of the phase, We use the derived probability density function(pdf) of the phase in Nakagami fading channel. We analyze the error performance of modulation signals using order statistics on generalized combining reception and find adequate diversity branch number.

  • In this paper, the general formula of disparity estimation based on Bayesian Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) algorithm is derived. The generalized formula is implemented with the plane configuration model and applied to multiple baselined stereograms. The probabilistic plane configuration model consists of independence and similarity among the neighboring disparities in the configuration. The independence probabilistic model reduces the computation and guarantees the discontinuity at the object boundary region. The similarity model preserves the continuity or the high correlation of disparity distribution. In addition, we propose a hierarchical scheme of disparity compensation in the application to multiple-view stereo images. According to the experiments, the derived formula and the proposed estimation algorithm outperformed other ones. The proposed probabilistic models are reasonable and approximate the pure joint probability distribution very well with decreasing the computations to O(n(D)) from O(n(D)4) of the generalized formula. And, the hierarchical scheme of disparity compensation with multiple-view stereos improves the performance without any additional overhead to the decoder.

Performance Evaluation of Variable-Vocabulary Isolated Word Speech Recognizers with Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) Estimation-Based Speaker Adaptation in an Office Environment (최대 사후 추정 화자 적응을 이용한 가변어휘 고립단어 음성인식기의 사무실 환경에서의 성능 평가)

  • 본 논문에서는 임의의 단어를 인식하기 위하여 음성학적으로 최적화된 (phonetically-optimized word) 음성 데이터베이스를 사용하여 훈련된 가변어휘 고립단위 음 성인식기의 실제 인식기 사용 환경에서의 성능을 평가하였다. 이를 위하여, 훈련 데이터베이 스에서와 상이한 환경에서 수집된 음성학적으로 균형 잡힌(phonetically-balanced word) 고 립 단어 음성을 테스트 데이터로 사용하였다. 테스트 데이터는 일반적인 사무실에서 작동하 는 노트북 PC에서 내장 마이크를 사용하여 녹음되었다. 이렇게 녹음된 음성을 사용하여 고 립단어 인식기의 인식률을 측정하였다. 이 인식기는 최대 사후(maximum a posteriori) 추정 알고리듬을 사용하여 화자의 변화에 적응하였다. 컴퓨터 모의실험 결과에 의하면 화자 적응 을 하지 않은 기본 시스템은 깨끗한 음성에 대하여 81.3%에서 사무실 환경 음성에 대하여 69.8%로 인식률이 저하되었다. 사무실 환경 음성에 대하여, 비교사 점진(unsupervised incremental) 모드에서 최대 사후 추정 화자 적응 알고리듬을 적용하였을 경우에는 화자적 응을 하지 않은 경우에 비하여 9%의 에러를 감소시키며, 50단어의 적응 단어를 사용하여 교사 묶음(supervised batch) 모드에서 최대 사후 추정 화자 적응 알고리듬을 적용하였을 경우에는 16%의 에러를 감소시켰다.

  • In this paper, we propose an inter-symbol interference (ISI) estimation scheme based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm for faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) systems. Unfortunately, the ISI estimator based on the MAP algorithm requires relatively high computational complexity. To reduce the complexity of the MAP based ISI estimator, we propose a hybrid ISI estimation scheme based on the MAP and successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithms. The proposed scheme not only offers good ISI estimation performances but also requires reasonably low complexity.
