  • This study was conducted to develop a forest education program through middle school curriculum linkage. We used the ADDIE model, comprising the five phases of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation, to secure the objectivity of the program. In the Analysis phase, middle school textbooks were analyzed while considering middle school students' needs for curriculum linkage and the developmental stages of adolescents. The Design phase focused on promoting an understanding of curriculum subjects based on what was reviewed in the Analysis phase and concretized and organized a program that can be implemented in the forest, with a focus on science and physical education, based on the results of middle school students' needs. We also established the objectives and goals of curriculum linkage forest education, established the concept of the program, and selected the educational contents, teaching-learning methods, and evaluation methods. In the Development phase, we developed a 2-night, 3-day program linkage with the middle school curriculum and created a manual for instructors and a workbook for students. In the Implementation phase, we revised and supplemented the program through the first test operation with 24 students in their second year of middle school, after which, we carried out a six-session program for the 2-night, 3-day as the second test operation with 17 students in their second year of middle school. In the Evaluation phase, the program was evaluated by the students who participated in the second test operation using questionnaires on satisfaction and curriculum linkage understanding as well as rating scales for attitudes toward forests and environmental sensitivity. The results showed that middle school students showed positive significance in satisfaction and understanding of the middle school curriculum as well as attitudes toward forests and environmental sensitivity through the forest education program.

The data for this study were collected from the sample consisted of the middle school in Chongju for two weeks period in December, 2001. In analyzing the data, t-test, one-way ANOVA and $x^2$-test were done by using SPSS 10.1 for window to compare data between the sexes of the students and grades of the students. A Pearson's correlation analysis was carried out to determine the relationships among the diagnostic variables. The Pearson's correlation between health behavior and life satisfaction was .52, which was significant at the level of P<.01. The Pearson's correlation between drug use behavior and mental health was .40, which was significant at the level of P<.01. The relationships between each diagnosis variable suggested by the PRECEDE model had been experimentally proven to be valid, supporting the conceptual framework of the study as appropriate for assessing the students' health and health education needs. The significance of this research is that it has diagnosed the needs of middle school health education by assessment of factors related to health hazard behaviors and meantal health of the students. The research findings suggest an integrated system of school health education to be contrieved to enhance the effectiveness of the education by strengthening the related factors such as parents' interest to improve the health of middle school students.

Self-reports on their dietary behavior and one-day dietary records were obtained from 396 middle school students and 364 high school students using anonymous questionnaires. The results were summarized as follows; the students with working mothers were more likely to not to eat properly and their dietary behavior was generally inadequate, showing a greater irregularity for meals, more of a tendency to skip breakfast, less diversity of food intake, and a higher incidence of drinking and smoking. One-day dietary records obtained by 24k recall methods showed less diverse food intake and a higher rate of skipped meals in students with working mothers. Drinking and smoking were more prevalent among middle school students whose mothers were working than among those students with unemployed mothers, but in the case of high school student the difference was not significant. With more and more housewives seeking jobs, more attention needs to be given to the dietary and nutritional intake of their children, especially among middle school students. High school students seem to be less affected than middle school students by their mother's employment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to clarify the social stigma phenomenon in teachers' perceptions and attitudes toward students who are classified as mental health support needs students in middle and high schools. Methods: Qualitative research was conducted through in-depth interviews and observations of 17 teachers and 2 consultants from 2 middle and high schools in Green City, which were evaluated as successful among the six pilot project schools designated by the Ministry of Education in 2013. The study's analysis is based on Hatch's hermeneutical method. Common categories were developed from the interviews and observations. Then, inferences were made per category and given importance to draw conclusions and lessons. Results: Teachers had a strong stigma in their perceptions of and attitudes to special needs students. Their perception was that those students are bound to go wrong due to family problems, even some having difficulty breathing, and that it's beyond their limit to help them. In addition, their attitudes included stereotypes, favoritism, punishment, and referral to experts. As a result, teachers did not expect those students would be cured or change and showed passive attitudes while shifting the responsibility to families and experts. Conclusion: This study is meaningful in that it showed the limitations of the role of teachers regarding mental health support needs students from the perspective of the teachers themselves. Today, when students' mental health problems are emerging as a serious issue, it is necessary to provide support to improve teacher's awareness and capabilities regarding adolescent mental health problems. In addition, we suggest the current selective policy that sorts out special needs students and provides care for them to evolve into a universal policy that improves public awareness and focus on prevention.
