This study purposes to identify how the 'selection' of library materials shold be changed in the electronic environment to improve library services fundamentally. The study scrutinized the essence of selection, the relationship between selection and collection management, and the results of various studies to define the selection. The study implies: 1) the selection must be changed to the function providing users with assessment information of library materials, which helps the users access to entire scholarly information. 2) the assessment information could be input from different libraries and used by all users connected to the library network.

Standardization is a prerequisite of quality control in any field. Library field is not an exception. The bibliographic control structures of AACR2R, MARC, DDC, LCC, LCSH, ISBD are highly standardized and dependent on rigorous authority work, so that libraries and bibliographic utilities using these tools could provide effective quality services. In order to emphasize the importance of standardization in the field of bibliographic control structures, this study focuses on inconsistencies in transliterated foreign personal and geographic names in headings, used as the caption of a given class as well as in notes describing what is found in a class or clarifying the notation hierarchy in the 4th edition of KDC. This study also examines Korean transliteration of loan words in the schedule as well as the transliterated entries of the Relative Index.

The purpose of this study is measure library use behaviors among faculty members and faculty awarenesses toward bibliographic education for undergraduates. Questionnaire listings offered by C university library were sent 200 faculties. 56% responded questionnaires were analyzed. The results are as follows. $\circledS1$They used library one more times per a month and during vocations & prefered to use scholarly journals. $\circledS2$They wanted 'subscription for scholarly journals,' 'inter-library loan,' but they seldom experienced in inter-library loan. $\circledS3$They gained the library skills in experiences and they had the average level of library skills. They used secondary sources and recognized traditional reference services. $\circledS5$They intended to bibliographic education for the faculty and the wanted group of 10 less and education for the new faculty members. $\circledS6$They though the students should be able to learn needed library skills. but wasn't necessary. $\circledS7$They intended to intergrate bibliographic education and cooperate with librarians. But they hadn't been familiar with librarians and encouraged students to use library.

The purpose of this paper is to find out the present status of public library management. The assumptions on which this research is based are that there are differences between th theories taught at the educational institutions for librarians and the practices actually managed at libraries, and that the differences are greater in Korea than those in the United States of America as the former has a shorter library history and is a more bureaucratic society. The data were collected were collected through the questionnaires sent to fifty-five public library managers in Taegu and Kyungpook province. Forty-two respondents replied, making the returned rate of 76.4%. The results show that there exist some differences between theories and practices, but they are not so great as expected. It was found out that there is a difference between what the theorists state and what the practicing managers accept. It was also found out that the library managers agree that the new management theories and techniques can be adopted to their libraries. The hindering factors are found out, and based on the findings, a few suggestions are provided.

With the development of indexing and retrieval techniques and the trends of information retrieval environment becoming more and more user-friendly, existing guideline for international thesaurus establishment standards and basic term relations currently used in thesaurus have become to longer adequate. The purpose of this study is to present solutions to expanding term relations which will fit new information retrieval environment. This report views standards for ISO 2788 and ANSI/NISO Z 39.19, and compares and analyzes 20 thesaurus basis term relations currently used both at home and abroad(14 overseas and 6 in Korea) to find out problems and limitations. Based on findings of the study, this report suggests how to expand thesaurus basic term relations to accomodate changes in information retrieval environment.

The purpose of this study provides the conceptual and practical framework on the strategy to enhance services for the visually handicapped in the braille libraries. In order to achieve this purpose, the questionnaires, the interview, and the observation of the data collection techniques are used in the study, and the braille libraries throughout Korea which are in operation are selected as subjects for the research and survey. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Most of the braille libraries, about 70%, are located in Seoul. It thus appears that this geographical unbalance cause the visually handicapped inconvenience in use, who is especially living at the regions where no braille library is located nearby. 2. To enhance the efficiency of the library services for the visually handicapped, first of all, the limited scope of the subject as well as the poor volume of the collections should be resolved as soon as possible. 3. Most of the libraries are neither equipped with necessary facilities to publish in braille nor secured the supporting instruments which facilitate to use library services for the visually handicapped satisfactorily. 4. The collections for the visually handicapped consist of the brailles and the recordings mainly. Because the visually handicapped is difficult to access and visit at the libraries alone, these materials are generally circulating rather outward by postal service than inward. 5. The qualified staff who has the very responsible position for reading and circulation is required to have educational background in library and information science, to have passions for the visually handicapped, and to have abilities to understand and translate the materials in braille.

The purpose of this study is to confirm what the stress factors are in performing their jobs among librarians in Public libraries. The study further investigates to figure out the difference of the degree in cognition of job stress according to demographic characteristics of individuals and the impacts of the stress factors on job satisfaction. A survey was conducted for the study sending questionaires to 113 librarians working in 14 Public libraries in Pusan. The results of the study are followings: 1) Females experience higher job stress than males. 2) The younger the age, the higher the job stress. Also, the shorter the year at work, the higher the job stress. 3) The lower the license class, the higher the job stress. Also, singles than married have higher job stress. 4) In the impacts of stress factors on job satisfaction, role conflict is the most powerful factor, and then role overload, career development, role underload, role ambiguity and interpersonal relation, each in order.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the service quality measure and service quality level between one sample library and the other. Most typically, service quality is defined in terms of reducing the gap between customer expectations and the actual service provided. This research also focuses on gap reduction. Service quality concept was originally discussed in a commercial environment and may require some adaptation to the non-commercial environment of the academic library. A revised service quality measure that developed by P. J. Calvert and P. Hernon(1996) was used for this research. Results showed that service quality measure of this research was reliable(99 service quality items scale's Cronbach Alpha coefficient was 0.983) and was validated by correlation and factor analysis. Therefore service quality measure of this research will be applied positively for academic libraries. And this research showed that the service quality level of sample academic library was inferior to that of the others. The service quality of sample academic library should be improved to meet the customer's needs and expectations immediately.

This study is to evaluate the economies of scale of the public libraries in metropolitan cities. The results of the regression analysis confirm that for all samples of libraries there is diseconomies of scale in library operations (${\Sigma}b_{n}$≒6.14∼10.91). Therefore, all the types of public libraries should be improve productivity by user-based collection development, increasing circulation turnover rate, activation of in-library use, strengthening mobile library services, rational planning of services area, development of reading programs connected with the curriculum, a new branch library plans, etc.

As the number of Web reference resources are gradually increasing, reference librarians have to create a Web-based reference resources site. This site includes links to the Web reference resources of good quality, so that reference librarians and users will become accustomed to using these resources. This Study first explores the function of the Web-based reference resources site. Next, it carries out a survey of the current trends in america and Korea. Finally, a model Web-based reference resources site for academic libraries is developed.

The Korean oldbooks that represent the spiritual product of the ancestors in the form of physical shape are absolute need for retrieval and new evaluation through research and discovery. To earn Korean oldbooks that have these values, catalogue of Korean oldbooks and annotation book were used as secondery materials. But since there haven't been publications of Korean oldbook catalogue that can be used as Korean oldbook search engine, Korean oldbooks that has same title was valued differently by the different authors and defined differently according to bibliographic study. And there even has been a case when, even though there is same edition it was consider the only one. Therefor it can cause a lot of mistakes when you can't over look totally. So you can expert better results in structuring DB with computer then publicized catalogue of Korean oldbooks. But at this present time, since all of the DB that have been structured are not unified as one system and operated separately in their organizations, there has been a problem like creating different bibliographic information for same Korean oldbooks. In this study, as one of the solution to the problems of searching Korean oldbooks, we are making a plan to develop the unified retrieval system of Korean oldbooks using hypertext system. And with these finding, we are suggesting the further way of developing retrieval system of Korean oldbooks.

정보화가 진행되어감에 따라 정보격차는 더욱 크게 발생한다. 이 논문에서는 정보격차의 요인으로 경제적 빈부차, 정보의 상품화, 그리고 정보수단의 사유화, 정보폭증을 들고 있다. 이러한 요인에 의해 필연적으로 발생하는 정보부자와 빈자간의 정보격차의 해소를 위해서는 정책적인 노력이 있어야 하며 이러한 정보정책은 민주주의의 원칙에 의거하여 이루어져야 한다. 이 논문에서는 민주주의의 원칙에 따라 공정하고 공평한 정보에의 접근과 정보이용이 이루어질 수 있도록 정보의 공공영역이 확보되어야 하며, 이를 위해서 공공도서관과 공공교육, 공론의 장의 역할과 기능이 확대되어야 함을 주장한다.

This study tries to analyze the problems of rules for cataloging currently used n Korea such as KCR 3rd ed., KORMARC Description Rules, and KORMARC format, and to propose the methods solving the non-standardization of Korean cataloging records as follows: 1) No-main heading principles should be established so as to be applied to MARC format. 2) Description rules of cataloging currently used in Korea should be coordinated in accordance with MARC system and principles of bibliographical description. 3) Description rules of cataloging currently used in Korea should be coordinated in accordance with MARC system and principles of bibliographical description. 4) Unifying the format for CRT screen to display online catalog records are needed. 5) Conventional cataloging rules and MARC format should be coordinated.

This paper aims to study on bibliographic reference forms, especially focused on the forms of korean sources. Although bibliographic reference is one of the critical elements in academic works, it seems every work has it's own forms in Korea. The fact that the bibliographic reference forms in korean works are made up by option causes the present state of diversity which makes difficulty in bibliographic control. The results of this search into internal academic journals show the diversity in the entry of title and significant gap of bibliographic reference forms among disciplines.
