The premixed combustion system applying exhaust gas recirculation was investigated to achieve the low pollutant emission and the high thermal efficiency. In this study, it was studied the effects of EGR on the thermal efficiency,
$NO_x$ and CO emissions with various EGR ratios and equivalence ratios. As results, when equivalence ratio was increased, thermal efficiency increased and$NO_x$ and CO concentration increased. When EGR was applied,$NO_x$ and CO concentration decreased and thermal efficiency increased. Especially, in the case of 15% of EGR ratio at 0.85 of equivalence ratio,$NO_x$ and CO concentration will be a smaller than these of a current operating condition of the boiler and thermal efficiency was about 1.7% higher. -
The ignition of aluminum particles under high pressure and temperature conditions is studied. The laser ablation method is used to generate aluminum particles exposed to pressures ranging between 0.35 and 2.2 GPa. A continuous wave
$CO_2$ laser is then used to heat surface of the aluminum target until ignition is achieved. We confirm ignition by a spectroscopic analysis of AlO vibronic band of 484 nm wavelength. The radiant temperature is measured with respect to various pressures for tracing of required heating energy for ignition. Then the ignition temperature is deduced from the radiant temperature using the thermal diffusion equation. The established ignition criteria for corresponding temperature and pressure can be used in the modeling of detonation behavior of heavily aluminized high explosives or solid propellants. -
This study reports the results of an experimental investigation of emission and temperatures from the syngas-air premixed flame with a various mixture composition in the region of large equivalence ratios. The effects of hydrogen contents and equivalence ratios on the flame velocity, which reported before, and emission of syngas fuel are examined. In this study, representative syngas mixture compositions (
$H_2:CO$ ) such as$H_2:CO=10:90$ , 25:75, 50:50 and 75:25 and equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 5.0 have been conducted. The emissions of syngas fuel were measured by the high precision analyzer with enclosure configuration and the adiabatic temperatures are calculated by used Chemkin basis. The NOx emission level is coincided relatively well with the adiabatic temperature distributions in lean mixture conditions, but for rich mixture conditions NOx level was also increased again even though the adiabatic temperature decreases. Such an increasing characteristics in rich mixture conditions is coincided well with the tendency that rather the flue gas temperature increases. -
To investigate the effect of an inner diameter of the extension tube on the self-ignition when high pressurized hydrogen abruptly released through a tube, both experimental and numerical approach are used. The result show that there is a possibility to have successful ignition when the tube diameter is decreased even at the pressure that could not give sustainable flame with a larger diameter tube. Numerical simulation show the flame development inside the tube and weak and stretch flame spout the tube for 10.9 mm tube, whereas strong complete flame has been generated for 3 mm tube.

The aim of this study is to investigate the parametric characteristics on regenerative system with oxy-fuel combustion by experiment. Regenerative system with a pair of oxygen burners and regenerators is used for evaluating regenerator characteristics according to design parameters such as ball (regenerator medium) size, regenerator weight, and bypass of exhaust gas. The temperature profiles with time are varied by ball size and regenerator weight. The bypass of exhaust gas shows that the heat recovery ratio increases while the regenerating temperature efficiency slightly decreases.

In the design of combined cycle power plants, the design parameters considered mainly could be changed and added for performance evaluation with change on the design objective and method. Therefore, the design criteria considering the different objectives and type of power plant were needed. Thermodynamic and economic analyses of various types of gas turbine combined cycle power plants with demand on generation of power and heat and carbon capture system from high pressure flue gas have been performed to establish criteria for optimization of power plants.

The cofiring of renewable fuel in coal fired boilers is an attractive option to mitigate
$CO_2$ emissions, since it is relatively low cost option for efficiently converting renewable fuel to electricity by adding biomass as partial substitute of coal. However, it would lead to reduce plant efficiency and flexibility in operation, and increase operation cost and capital cost associated with renewable fuels handling and firing equipment. The aim of this study is to investigate reduction of carbon dioxide at varying percentage of biomass in fuel blend to the boiler biomass, and estimate operation and capital cost. Wood pellet, PKS (palm kernel shell), EFB (empty fruit bunch) and sludge are considered as a renewable fuels for a cofiring with coal. Several approaches by the cofiring ratio are chosen from past plant demonstrations and commercial cofiring operation, and they are evaluated and discussed for CO2 reduction and cost estimation. -
Various solid particle materials are treated in the industrial processes including fixed-beds or moving grate beds, and modeling approaches have been widely applied to the processes to predict and evaluate their performance. For this study, the modeling approach was applied to iron ore sintering process with various improvement measures. Based on the previous modeling approach, the changes and effects of the improvement measures were discussed at the point of controlling the combustion environment in the bed.

This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition characteristics of n-heptane and n-butanol mixture. The
$O_2$ concentration was fixed to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) rate condition. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine. In addition, a numerical study of the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species after combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing n-butanol ratio and the reactivity decreased by low$O_2$ concentration. -
In this study, the characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from diesel and biodiesel fuel combustion was experimentally investigated. The experiment was performed in a single cylinder common-rail compression ignition engine. The fuels were injected at -5 CAD (Crank angle degree) ATDC (After top dead center) with 80 MPa injection pressure. Size distribution of PM was measured by scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and morphology of PM was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). PM from biodiesel shows lower emission level and smaller primary particles.

The present work is an experimental investigation on potential operating range using directly injected gasoline fuel in a single-cylinder compression ignition (CI) engine. The objectives of present study were to apply auto-ignited combustion to gasoline fuel and to evaluate potential operating range. In order to auto-ignite gasoline fuel in CI engine, the fuel direct-injection system and the intake air system were modified that a flow rate and temperature of intake air were regulated. The heat-release rate (HRR), net indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), start of combustion (SOC), and combustion duration were derived from in-cylinder pressure data in a test engine, which has 373.33cc displacement volume and 17.8 compression ratio. The exhaust emission characteristics were obtained emission gas analyzer and smoke meter on the exhaust line system.

Hydrogen-dimethy ether (DME) and hydrogen-diesel compression ignition engine combustion were investigated and compared each other in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing,
$-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME and diesel were injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME and diesel inejction timing was varied to find the optimum CI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. Fuel consumption, heat release rate, and exhaust emissions were measured to analyze each combustion characteristics of each ignition promoter. Fuel consumption was decreased when diesel was used as an ignition promoter. This is due to the lower volatility of diesel which created more stratified charge than DME. -
In order to simulate and visually observe combustion phenomena in cylindrical radial-flow porous inert media, a radial multi-channel burner, made of transparent quartz plates, was fabricated. Flame stabilization characteristics and its pulsating instability in the burner were experimentally investigated with respect to various mixture flow rates and equivalence ratio. As a result, five different flame behaviors, such as stable flame, pulsating instability, sudden extinction, blowout and unstable extinction, were observed. Mean radial position of circularly arranged multi-flame and its averaged burning velocity were measured and then compared to the freely propagating flame. The multi-flame pulsation frequency is about several tens of Hz and it is supposed to be generated by the heat diffusion enhancement to cold pre-mixture by the intensive gas-solid interaction.

Stabilization characteristics of highly
$N_2$ -diluted$CH_4-O_2$ flame in an axially two-section porous inert medium were experimentally investigated for its application to the waste gas scrubber in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The flame behaviors were observed with respect to the fuel and$N_2$ flow rates and the equivalence ratios. As a result, four kinds of flame behaviors such as stable, flashback crossing the interface, blowout and sudden extinction were observed. It was also found that there exists two flame regime divided by a critical fuel flow rate. In addition, the flame stability was discussed based on the$N_2$ index which means the abatement capacity of our combustor in scrubbing the waste gas from the semiconductor processes. -
Entrainment length and recirculation ratio that are important factors of flameless combustion systems were analyzed by injection conditions using three dimensional numerical simulation. As a result, the entrainment length increased with an increase of momentum ratio and distance of between nozzle. Also, in case of increasing in momentum of oxidation, recirculation ratio was increased and the average temperature was decreased.

Rotary kiln reactors are frequently equipped with an axial burner with which solid burden material is directly heated. Lifters are commonly used along the length of the system to lift particulate solids and increase the heat transfer between the solid bed and the combustion gas. The material cascading from the lifters undergoes drying and reacting through direct contact with the gas stream. In this study, volume distribution of materials held within lifters was modeled according to the different lifter configuration and appropriate configuration was used for the design purpose. This was applied to the one-dimensional heat balance model of a counter-current flow reactor, which contributes to the increase of the effective contact surface, and thereby enhances the heat transfer.

A new soot particle generation system has been developed and tested. The soot generation system consists of two sections, a fuel supply and a soot production. In the fuel supply module, either liquid fuel precisely controlled by a syringe pump is mixed with preheated carrier gas and rapidly evaporated or gaseous fuel controlled by a MFC is diluted with dilution gas. The soot production module contains a heater that can raise the gas/fuel temperature up to
$1400^{\circ}C$ . The physical and chemical properties of produced soot particles depend on the type and concentration of fuel, the residence time, and temperature in the soot production section. The soot generation system will be utilized to produce well-defined soot particles for soot studies such as the evaluation of experimental sampling and analysis processes for the quantitative assessment of PM and BC from ships and the adverse health effects on pulmonary and cardiovascular systems of human body. -
Rotary kiln furnace is one of the most widely used gas-solid reactors in the industrial field. Although the rotary kiln is a versatile system and has different size, approach to the reactor modeling can be generalized in terms of flow motion of the solid and gas phase, heat transfer and chemical reactions on purpose. In this paper, a performance analysis example case of axial direction direct flame rotary kiln is introduced.

Biomass is well known for organic resources photosynthesized by carbon dioxide water in the air and thus it can be widely used in the form of energy and production for various kinds of materials. Through pyrolysis, biomass can be transformed into solid(biochar), liquid(bio-oil), and combustible gas on the different condition of temperature and heating rate. That's why biomass can be practically used to preprocess and produce a variety of elements. This work is to analyze the characteristics of slow pyrolysis of three different kinds of biomass extracted from Indonesia. They showed similar moisture content and combinations of combustible matters and had quite a large discrepancy in the ash among them like 2.1 & of Bagasse, 91% of PKS, and 20.9% of Paddy Straw, respectively. yield of biochar, solid form of the biomass, steadily decreased when the temperature went up and that of bio-oil the highest at the temperature of 500 degrees Celsius. At the same temperature range, PKS bio-oil showed 51.4 % of yield and Bagasse had 55.1% while it turned out that Paddy straw showed the lowest yield of 37.2%. The apparent density was also measured to figure out the density of each product from the pyrolysis experiments at the temperature of 500 degrees Celsius. The result was like these; the density of biochar was 0.17, the lowest, and that of Tree stem was 1.3 when mixed by an equal amount of biochar and bio-oil.

In a syngas cooling system of coal gasification process, fly slag carried by syngas deposit on the surface of heat exchanger. The deposited materials form a fouling layer with several millimeters thickness, disturbing heat transfer between steam and syngas. This study investigates flow and heat transfer characteristics of syngas in helical coil heat exchanger using computational fluid dynamics under clean and fouled surface condition. Process model were also designed and its results are in good agreement with CFD results.

This study investigates the characteristics of biochar by slow pyrolysis at
$500^{\circ}C$ for various biomass residues. Six biomass materials were tested: Tree bark, Tree stem, bagasse, cocopeat, paddy straw and palm kernel shell. In the biochar yield, the effect of ash in the raw biomass was significant for paddy straw. Excluding the ash content, the timber bark, bagasse and paddy straw had a similar biochar yield of 26-29 wt.%. Tree stem and bagasse had well developed pores in a wide size range and large surface area over$200m^2/g$ . Cocopeat and PKS has significantly higher biochar yield due to the increased content of lignin, but the development of intra-particle pores and microscopic surface area was very poor. The elemental composition, pH and other properties of the biochar samples were also compared. -
The inert gas dilution effect for the stability of a stratified propane premixed flame has been experimentally studied. The addition of inert gases to a stratified premixed flame, which used to be very stable without dilution, makes a flame unstable. The lower equivalence ratio on the outer premixed flame and the lower fuel flow rate through the inner nozzle were observed to be the more stable conditions for the stratified premixed flame with nitrogen or argon dilution. It has been interpreted with the flame structure change such as shift of stoichiometric ratio region in a flame.

An analytical study on performance of superdetonative mode ram accelerator was conducted for understanding the S225 experimental result of ISL. It would be noticeable that ISL S225 experimental result could be analytically simulated with the assumptions of inlet shockwave, equilibrium combustion chemistry, temperature dependent specific heat, and C-J oblique detonation in superdetonative operation mode. As result, the S225 experiment could be affected by heat of aluminum. Also, this study showed that the improper assumption, like isentropic assumption on shockwave, or constant specific heat on combustion, might cause misunderstanding about experimental result.

This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the supercritical mixing and combustion processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the standard k-e model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using generalized cubic equation of state. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent nonpremixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the effects of swirl on flame structure of supercritical kerosene liquid propellant combustion.

With an increase in the use of low rank coals in power plants, various operational issues were raised in the fuel storage and supply, combustion, boiler and flue gas treatment systems. In the fuel storage and supply system, the main issue is the self-heating propensity of low rank coals leading to spontaneous combustion in yard storage, transport and pulverization. This study evaluated the reactivity of various sub-bituminous and bituminous coals with oxygen at low temperatures by analyzing the temperature increase characteristics of coals under a constant flow rate of oxygen supply. The results were quantified to a self-heating index and the relation with the fuel properties were evaluated.

In pulverized coal fired boilers, slagging and fouling may cause significant effect on the operational life of boiler. As increasing a consumption of low rank coal, slagging and fouling are main issues in pulverized coal combustion. This study predicts ash deposition propensity in a 0.7 MW pilot-scale furnace. Slagging model is employed as a User-Defined Function (UDF) of FLUENT and validated against measurement and prediction. The results show good agreement compared with experiment. There is need to development of a pulverized coal combustion and slagging analysis at low coal.

Commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes traditionally rely on the computational efficiency of the simplified single-film apparent char kinetic model to predict char particle temperatures and char conversion rates in pulverized coal boilers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability of the single-film apparent kinetic model and to suggest the importance of proper use of this model. For this, a parametric study was conducted with a consideration of main parameters such as Stefan flow, product species, particle evolution, and kinetic parameters.

Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the mechanism of spontaneous ignition of hydrogen within a certain length of downstream pipe released by the failure of pressure boundaries of various geometric assumption. The results show that local ignition is developed in limited area such as boundary layer and the mixing of hydrogen and air is weak at the planar pressure boundary conditions, whereas the flame fronts at the contact region are developed at the pressure boundaries of the spherical shape.

Flame behaviors in meso-scale rectangular channels are largely influenced by heat recirculation through wall. In order to investigate the effects of wall thermal property on the heat recirculation and flame behaviors, meso-scale rectangular channels, of which upper and lower walls are made of quartz, stainless steel and silicon carbide and front and rear walls of quartz for flame visualization, were fabricated in this study. As a result, characteristic mixture velocities of propane-air flame, such as transition, stationary, and instability onset velocities, were measured for each channel and various mixture conditions. The results show that thermal conductivity has a close relationship to the characteristic velocities.

The equivalence ratio is measured by LIBS(Laser-induced Breakdown spectroscopy) in hydrocarbon flame and high temperature (
${\sim}3200^{\circ}C$ ) oxyhydrogen flame, where a stoichiometric mixture of hydrogen and oxygen is produced from water through electrolysis. The ratio of the hydrogen and oxygen (H/O) atomic lines intensities is used for quantitatively determining the quivalence ratio. laser energy is evaluated for determining the optimal condition for plasma diagnostics. The minimum laser energy for generating plasma in a laminar premixed hydrocarbon flame was about 70 mJ, whereas oxyhydrogen flame. consequently the irradiated spot of a lower density in high temperature oxyhydrogen flame gave rise to bigger plasma in size, thus limiting the spatial resolution of the LIBS measurement. -
Spherically expanding flames are used to measure flame speeds, which are derived the corresponding laminar flame speeds at zero stretch. Dimethyl Ether-Air mixtures at high pressure are studied over an extensive range of equivalence ratios. The classical shadowgraph technique is used to detect the reaction zone. In analytical methodology the optimization process using least mean squares is performed to extract the laminar flame speeds. Laminar flame speeds are compared with results reported in the literature.

An experimental study in the dual swirl burner was conducted to analyze the temperature characteristics in the combustion field. The dual swirl burner consists of a main swirling pre-mixed flame with tangential swirler surrounding a pilot which can stabilize a diffusion flame or a partially premixed flame with vane swirler depending on whether fuel is supplied at the exit plane or further upstream. The purpose of this study is to analyse experimentally the characterization of flame temperature in the reacting zone, specially, according to the various combustor diameters like 80mm, 100mm, 130mm and 150mm(O.D). As a result, the temperatures of combustion field were decreased as the diameter of combustor increased. Therefore, these results can be expected that the larger diameter of combustor tend to emit less NOx emission than the small combustor.

This paper describes gas turbine combustion characteristics of synthetic natural gas which contains a small amount hydrogen content. By conducting ambient pressure high temperature combustion test at gas turbine relevant combustor geometry, the combustion characteristics such as combustion instability, NOx and CO emission, temperatures at turbine inlet, nozzle and dump plane, and flame structure from high speed OH chemiluminescence images were investigated when changing hydrogen content from zero to 5%. From the results, qualitative and quantitative relationships are derived between key aspects of combustion performance, notably NOx/CO emission and combustion instability. Natural gas containing hydrogen up to 5% does not show significant difference in view of all combustion characteristics except combustion instability. Only up to 1% hydrogen addition could not change the pressure fluctuation and phase gas between fluctuations of pressure and heat release. From the results, it can be concluded that synthetic national gas which contains 1% of hydrogen can be guaranteed for the stable and reliable operation of natural gas firing gas turbine.

An experimental study of a dual swirl burner was conducted to analyze NOx emission in the lean conditions. The dual swirl burner is composed of a combination of swirling jet premixed(main section) and diffusion flames(pilot section). It was operated with a co-swirling configuration and overall equivalence ratios between 0.6 and 0.8. The purpose of this study is to analyze experimentally the characterization of flame temperature and NOx concentration in reacting zone and to supply the useful experimental data for numerical simulations. The measurements of temperature and NOx concentration were captured using a thin digitally-compensated thermocouple and a sampling quartz probe with quenching effect of sudden expansion, and were measured by the NOx analyzer of chemiluminescence method. We could analyse the NOx emission characteristics comparing the temperature distributions in the lean equivalence ratios.

The Samsung Techwin has been developed the various types of combustor and fuel nozzle frontal devices for the aero engine and small scale industrial gas turbines. Currently, we have been developed the highly heat capacity and long-lived gas turbine combustor based on the short-lived combustor and fuel injector technologies. In this paper, the market trends and the information on the survey of an advanced gas turbine combustor were introduced for the development of large scale gas turbine combustor and fuel nozzle assembly.

Combustion stability margin of a model gas turbine has been assessed by utilizing damping ratios of measured dynamic pressure data. It is known that acoustic oscillations in combustion chambers can be described as a superposition of nonlinearly interacting oscillators. Based on this theoretical background, CSMA (Combustion Stability Margin Assessment) code has been developed. The code has been employed into a model gas turbine combustion experiment, focused on the combustion instability, to show its capability to determine the damping ratio of measured dynamic pressure and further to assess combustion stability margin of the experiment, and turned out that the code works well.

In recent years, the usage of fossil fuels has caused problems of climate change and global warming. Because the combustion of fossil fuels is related to the production of greenhouse gases (
$CO_2$ ,$CH_4$ , etc.), new technology in the field of combustion is needed in order to handle the crisis of climate change and the global warming. As one of the efforts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, the concept of regenerative oxy-fuel combustion for energy efficiency and carbon capture was suggested, In the current study, the development of an industrial regenerative oxy-fuel combustion furnace was introduced, which has been being performed at Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). -
Combustor development requires high fidelity simulation capable of predicting recirculation zone (RZ), temperature field, and pollutant emission. Swirling flow is widely used in combustor for its benefits in efficient mixing and flame stabilization by RZ. Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to calculate swirling flow in an expanding pipe [1], and shows higher accuracy than RANS. Reactive flow modeling using LES and flamelet model is validated with experiments by Barlow et al. [4] and Masri et al. [3]. Finally, heat transfer simulation of Samsung Techwin's combustor liner is presented.

Off-gas power plant is a renewable energy power plant which generate electrical energy using the low calorie FOG and BFG as main fuel. This combined cycle power plant is comprised of gas turbines, gas compressors, steam turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment such as gas mixer, mixing tank, and gas cooler. In this paper, a off-gas power plant and development of its several equipment using CFD are introduced.

The low rank coal combustion and biomass-coal co-firing characteristics were reviewed on this study for the power plant construction. The importance of using low rank coal(LRC) for power plant is increasing gradually due to power generation economy and biomass co-firing is also concentrated as power source because it has carbon neutral characteristics to reduce green-house effect. The combustion characteristics of low rank coal and biomass for a 310MW coal firing power plant and a 100MW biomass and coal co-firing power plant were studied to apply into actual power plant design and optimized the furnace and burner design.

Gas turbine technology has steadily advanced since its inception and continues to evolve. Development is active in producing both smaller gas turbines and more powerful and efficient engines. However, it is shown that our state-of-the-art technologies for gas turbine developments remain at a basic level by comparisons with advanced technology countries. This paper shows that development process and preliminary design tools for gas turbine combustor were introduced as a first results of source technology secure researches for the gas turbine combustors.
