  • Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) embedded diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy composites were fabricated for improving its mechanical properties and thermal stability. The mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites changed significantly with the introduction of PES. The value of the fracture toughness of this composite also was increased remarkably about 24%. Thermal stability of PES/epoxy composites also improved 12%, which was calculated with integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT). From the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) result, the curing temperature and curing heat decreased according to the increase of PES contents. These were attributed to the good distribution and the formation of the semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) composed of the epoxy network and linear PES.

  • The dielectric constants of fluorine-containing epoxy resins, 2-diglycidylether of benzotrifluoride(FER)/4,4'-diamino-diphenyl methane (DDM) and diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)/DDM systems were evaluated by dielectric spectrometer. Glass transition temperature and thermal stability factors, including initial decomposed temperature, temperatures of maximum rate of degradation, and decomposition activation energy of the cured specimens were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. For the mechanical properties of the casting specimens, the fracture toughness, flexural, and impact tests were performed, and their fractured surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope. The dielectric constant of FER/DDM system was lower than that of commercial DGEBA/DDM system, and the mechanical properties of the cured specimens showed higher values than those of DGEBA/DDM system. This was probably due to the introduction of trifluoromethyl (CF$_3$) group into the side chain of the epoxy resins, resulting in improving the electric and mechanical properties of the epoxy cure system studied.

  • A series of organic-inorganic hybrids, PCL/EP/$SiO_2$, involving epoxy resin and triethoxysilane-terminated polycaprolactone elastomer (PCL-TESi) were prepared via polymerization of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with amine curing agent KB-2 and sol-gel process of PCL-TESi. The curing reactions were started from the initially homogeneous mixture of DGEBA, KB-2 and the PCL-TESi. The organicinorganic hybrids containing up to 4.95% (wt) of $SiO_2$ were obtained and characterized by FT-IR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). It was experimentally shown that the swelling property in toluene, morphologies and thermal properties of the resulting hybrids were quite dependent on the contents of $SiO_2$. The crosslink network density decreases with increasing of the PCL-TESi. And in TEM, the phase separated morphology of these hybrids was found, which resulted from the coagulation of Si-O-Si networks resulting from $-Si(OC_2H_5)_3$ of PCL-TESi self-curing by hydrolytic silanol condensation, with the advancement of the curing reaction in the modified epoxy resin systems. Meanwhile, the change of the $SiO_2$ content made the morphologies changed from aggregated particles of Si-O-Si in the hybrid to nanocluster of interconnected Si-O-Si particles, then to aggregated Si-O-Si dispersing in the continuous cured epoxy phase again, and last to co-continuous interpenetrating network. The glass transition behavior of the hybrid material was cooperative motion of large chain segments, which were hindered by the inorganic Si-O-Si network. And in TG analysis, the characteristic temperature at 5% of weight loss was evidently increased from $120.5^{\circ}C$ of pure cured epoxy to $277.6^{\circ}C$ of 3.84% (wt) of $SiO_2$ modified epoxy due to the existence of Si-O-Si when PCL-TESi was added in the hybrid.

  • To determine the effect of chain length of linear amine curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) was cured with diethylenetriamine (DETA), triethylenetetraamine (TETA) and tetraethylenepentaamine (TEPA) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work, the effect of linear amine curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties was significantly influenced by chain length of curing agents. In contrast, the results showed that the DGEBA/DETA system had higher values than the DGEBA/TETA and DGEBA/TEPA system in the density, shrinkage (%), thermal expansion coefficient, tensile modulus, and flexural strength. Whereas the DGEBA/DETA cure system had lower values than the DGEBA/TETA and DGEBA/TEPA cure system in the maximum exothermic temperature, conversion (%), and T$_{g}$. These findings imply that the differences in the maximum conversion about the chain length of curing agents affect the thermal and mechanical properties.s.

  • Effects of heating time and radiation under high temperature on the properties of thermal, mechanical and shielding ability of modified (KNS-101), hydrogenated bisphenol-A(KNS-201) type epoxy resin and phenol-novolac(KNS-301) type epoxy resin based neutron shielding materials that are used for shipping casks for radioactive material have been investigated. At early stages, the offset temperatures of KNS-101, KNS-201 and KNS-301 increased with the heating time under high temperature, but it was rarely affected by the heating time in the later stages. In addition, the thermal conductivities of KNS-101 and KNS-201 decreased with heating time, but that of KNS-301 increased with the heating time. On the contrary, the thermal expansion coefficients of neutron shielding materials decreased with heating time. At the high temperature, the tensile strength and flexural strength of the shielding materials decreased with heating time. On the contrary, the thermal expansion coefficients of neutron shielding materials decreased with heating time. At the high temperature, the tensile strength and flexural strength of the shielding materials of KNS-101 and KNS-301 increased with heating time, but those of KNS-201 decreased with heating time. The shielding ability of neutron shielding materials slightly increased with the radiation dose, and shielding abilities of shielding materials of KNS-101 and KNS-201 were affected to a more extent than that of KNS-301 by radiation dose under high temperature.

  • To determine the effect of numbers of nitrogen atom bonded at ethyl group included in main chain of linear amine curing agents of epoxy-cure systems on the thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBF was cured with DETA, TETA and TEPA in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work, the effect of curing agents of the DGEBF/amine systems oil the thermal and mechanical properties was significantly influenced by numbers of nitrogen atom of curing agents. The results showed that heat of reaction increased, and maximum exothermic temperature decreased with the decrease of numbers of nitrogen atom. In case of cured systems, density and maximum conversion(%) had no relation to numbers of nitrogen atom, but flexural modulus and tensile modulus increased with the decrease of numbers of nitrogen atom in main chain. Thermal stability, shrinkage(%), Tg, tensile and flexural strength showed irregular tendency having nothing to do with numbers of nitrogem atom at a sight. This findings imply that the differences in the maximum conversion(%) about the chain length of curing agents affect the thermal and mechanical properties.

  • Due to the depletion of fossil oil and the increasing oil price, bio-plastic is currently topical. Bio-based plastics are synthesized from plant resources, unlike conventional petroleum-based counterparts. Therefore, the former minimizes global warming and reduces carbon dioxide emission. Fossil polycarbonate (PC)has good mechanical and optical properties, but its synthesis requires bisphenol-A and phosgene gas, which are toxic to humans. To address these problems, the fused deposition 3D printing process (hereafter, FDM) is studied using environmentally-friendly and high-strength bio-based PC. A comparisonof the environmental impact and tensile strength of fossil PC versus bio-based PC is presented herein, demonstrating that bio-based PC is more environmentally-friendly with higher tensile strength than fossil PC. The advantages of bio-based PC are applied in the FDM process for the fabrication of environmentally-friendly baby toys.

  • The curing acceleration of epoxy/amine system was investigated by using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC), The epoxy, diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) was cured with methylene dianiline (MDA) with or without accelerators. Two kinds of accelerators were tested for the study ; tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (DMP - 30) and 3 - (3,4 - dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea (DIURON). Heats of reaction and glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of the cured epoxy system were analyzed by DSC along with the estimation of activation energy by the dynamic DSC studies. It was found that DMP - 30 is more effective accelerator than DIURON which showed faster curing and lower activation energy.

  • This study investigated the effect of a pigment (C. I. Pigment Red 122) addition on mechanical properties of the epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) and G640 curing agent. The K/S value, thermal properties, tensile properties, and fracture toughness of the prepared epoxy samples were evaluated. When the pigment was added to the DGEBF/G640 epoxy system, the color of the epoxy resin changed to red from transparent and yellowish color, and the K/S value in the red region increased as the pigment content increased. When the pigment content was increased up to 0.1 phr, the tensile strength was improved up to 21.8 %, whereas the pigment content was over 0.1 phr, the tensile strength decreased. The fracture toughness was improves up to 23.1 % until the amount of pigment added was up to 0.2 phr, and then decreased when the amount of the pigment added was more than 0.2 phr. This attributed to the aggregation of the pigments in the epoxy resin when the amount of the pigment added was more than 0.2 phr. Therefore, the coloration of the epoxy resin with an organic pigment must be carried out very carefully because the coloration of epoxy resin affects its mechanical properties.

  • In this study, we configured a system which ranks hazardous chemicals to determine their management priorities based on experts' opinions and the existing CRS (chemical ranking and scoring). Aggregate exposure of food, health functional food, oriental/herbal medicine and cosmetics have been taken into account to determine management priority. In this study, 25 hazardous chemicals were selected, such as cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic, etc. These 25 materials were ranked according to their 1) risk (exposure or hazard) indexes, 2) exposure source-based weight, and 3) public interests, which were also formed based on the existing priority ranking system. Cadmium was scored the highest (178.5) and bisphenol A the lowest (56.8). Ten materials -- cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, tar, acrylamide, benzopyrene, aluminium, benzene, and PAHs -- scored higher than 100. Eight materials -- aflatoxin, manganese, phthalate, chromium, nitrate/nitrite, ethylcarbamate, formaldehyde, and copper -- recorded scores in the range from 70 to 100. Also evaluated as potential risks were 7 materials; sulfur dioxide, ochratoxin, dioxins, PCBs, fumonisin, methyl mercury, and bisphenol A, and these materials were scored above 50. Then we compared risk index and correlation coefficient of total scores to confirm the validity of the total scores; we analyzed correlation coefficient of parameter and indicator. We discovered that the total score and weight, which has incorporated public interests, were high and statistically significant. In conclusion, the result of this study contributes to strengthening risk assessment and risk management of hazardous chemicals.
