  • Thermal deformations and stresses due to temperature changes are the serious problems in cryogenic structures such as the torque tube in a superconducting generator, In this paper, the equations of thermal expansion coefficients expressed only by material properties and winding angles are derived for the filament wound composite tubes. The experimental results of thermal contraction of CFRP tubes are compared with those from theoretical approach. Composite tubes with optimally regulated thermal expansion coefficient are designed on the basis of the study for the torque tube in the superconducting generator with temperature distributions varying from 300K to 4.2 K. The filament winding angle of composites resisting thermal stresses properly is sought by the finite element method using layered shell elements. The results show that the composite tubes designed for the requirements in cryogenic environments can effectively cope with the thermal stress problem.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure thermal expansions of dental investments, Biovest(Casting Investment. Dentsply International INC, U.S.A.), Multi-Best (Use for all dental chrome-cobalt alloys, The Ransom & Randolph Co. U.S.A.), Kerr(Inlay Investment. Sybron Kerr, U.S.A.), O. K. (Inlay Investment. Shofu Dental MFG, Co. Japan), Whip-Mix (Cristobalite Inlay Investment. Whip-Mix Corporation. U.S.A.). Thermal expansion of specimens(5mm in diameter and 50mm in length) was measured by a dilatometer at the temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ by comparing expansion between standardized quartz and experimental specimens with heating rate about $300^{\circ}C$/hr. The following results were obtained. 1. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Biovest was $15{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 18/100 and $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 28/100. Those of Multi-Best were $9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 14/100 and $7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 24/100. 2. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Kerr were $17{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 38/100 and $14{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}c$ in the water powder ratio 48/100. Those of O. K. were $9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 33/100 and $7{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the water powder ratio 43/100 3. • The relationship between the precipitation of secondary phase and the thermal properties of Al-4.5%Cu alloy (in wt.%) after various heat treatments has been studied. Solid solution treatment of alloy was performed at 808 K for 6 hours, followed by warm water quenching; then, the samples were aged in air at 473 K for different times. The thermal diffusivity of the Al-4.5%Cu alloy changed with the heat treatment conditions of the alloy at temperatures below 523 K. The as-quenched specimen had the lowest thermal diffusivity, and as the artificial aging time increased, the thermal diffusivity of the specimen increased in the temperature range between 298 and 523 K. For the specimen aged for five hours, the thermal conductivity was 12% higher than that of the as-quenched specimens at 298 K. It is confirmed that the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of the Al-4.5%Cu alloy significantly depend on their thermal history at temperatures below 523 K. The precipitation and dissolution of the Al2Cu phase were confirmed via DSC for the alloys, and the formation of coefficient of thermal expansion peaks in TMA was caused by precipitation. The precipitation of supersaturated solid solution of Al-4.5%Cu alloys had an additional linear expansion of ≈ 0.05 % at 643 K during thermal expansion measurement.

  • High-strength low-alloy steel is one of the widely used materials in onshore and offshore plant engineering. We investigated the alloying effect of solute atoms in α-Fe based alloy using ab initio calculations. Empirical equations were used to establish the effect of alloying on the Vicker's hardness, screw energy coefficient, and edge dislocation energy coefficient of the steel. Screw and edge energy coefficients were improved by the addition of V and Cr solute atoms. In addition, the addition of trace quantities of V, Cr, and Mn enhanced abrasion resistance. Solute atoms and contents with excellent mechanical properties were selected and their thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior were investigated. The addition of Cr atom is expected to form alloys with low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient. This study provides a better understanding of the state-of-the-art research in low-alloy steel and can be used to guide researchers to explore and develop α-Fe based alloys with improved properties, that can be fabricated in smart and cost-effective manners.

  • A glass-ceramics material of composition %SiO_2$: 38.50, $Al_2O_3$: 26.00, $Na_2O$: 18.00, CaO: 6.00, MgO: 4.00, $TiO_2$: 7.50 was strengthened by coating a series of glazes$(SiO_2-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3-CaO-PbO-Na_2O-)$, which has lower thermal expansion coefficient than that of the glass-ceramics. The thermal expansion coefficient of the glazes ranges $80~90{\times}10^{-7}$cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$, whereas that of the glass-ceramics is $115{\times}10^{-7}$cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$. The glass-ceramics was identified to be composed of nepheline, carnegieite low form, and meta sodium silicate crystal by X-ray diffraction phase analysis. The glaze, having lower melting point and appropriate thermal expansion coefficient, was tried to be stable and good at secondary heat treatment.

  • SGCI(Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron), CVGCI(CV Graphite Cast Iron) and FGCI(Flake Graphite Cast Iron) having different contents of Mn($0.25%{\sim}0.85%$) and Ni($0.3%{\sim}1.2%$) were produced, respectively. The thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of the cast iron were investigated in the temperature range of $50^{\circ}C{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. As the graphite nodularity of the cast iron increases, thermal expansion coefficient increases, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity to thermal conductivity ratio decrease. The thermal expansion coefficient of the cast iron increases with increasing Mn content and decreases with increasing Ni content. The thermal conductivity of the cast iron decreases with increasing Mn and Ni contents.

  • The aim of this paper is to consider the effect of annealing on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of electroplated Invar Fe-Ni alloy. The CTE of the as-electroplated alloy is lower than those of alloys annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. XRD peaks become sharper as the as-electroplated alloy is annealed, which means the grain growth. The average grain sizes of as-electroplated and as-annealed alloys at $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ are 10 nm, 70 nm, and $2{\mu}m$, respectively, as determined by TEM and EBSD analyses. The CTE variation for the various grain sizes after annealing may come from the magnetostriction effect, which generates strain due to changes in the magnetization state of the alloys. The thermal expansion coefficient is considered to be affected by nano grain size in electroplated Fe-Ni Invar alloys. As grain size decreases, ferromagnetic forces might change to paramagnetic forces. The effect of lattice vibration damping of nano grain boundaries could lead to the decrease of CTE.

  • This paper presents ESPI system for the measurement of thermal expansion coefficient of STS430 up to 1,000$^{\circ}C$. Existing methods, strain gauge and moire have the limitation of contact to object and do not supply the coefficient up to 800$^{\circ}C$. There needs to measure the data up to 800$^{\circ}C$, because heat resistant materials have high melting temperature up to 1,000$^{\circ}C$. In previous studies related to thermal strain analysis, the quantitative results are not reported by ESPI at high temperature, yet. In-plane ESPI and vacuum chamber for the reduction of air turbulence and oxidation are designed for the measurement of the coefficient up to 1,000$^{\circ}C$and speckle correlation fringe pattern images are processed by commercial image filtering tool-smoothing, thinning and enhancement- to obtain quantitative results, which is compared with references data. The comparison shows two data are agreed within 4.1% blow 600$^{\circ}C$ however, there is some difference up to 600$^{\circ}C$. Also, the incremental ratio of the coefficient is changed up to 800$^{\circ}C$. The reason is the phase transformation of STS430 probably begins at 800$^{\circ}C$.

  • Phase stabilized leucite, which has high coefficient of thermal expansion, was synthesized, and its thermal expansion behavior was investigated. The homogeneous leucite phase was synthesized by solid state reaction from the mixture of $K_2CO_3-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$. and its stabilization from tetragonal to cubic phase was attempted by adding $Cs_2CO_3$ into starting materials. And fine powder with an average particle size of a few hundreds ${\mu}m$ were fabricated by planetary milling. During milling, amorphization of leucite was observed and recrystallized after heat treatment. The thermal expansion behavior of tetragonal and cubic leucite has measured and discussed. The average coefficient of thermal expansion of tetragonal and cubic phase leucite from room temperature to $750^{\circ}C$ was $21.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and $14.5{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$, respectively.
