The structural vibrations of a flat plate induced by fluctuating wall pressures within wall-bounded transonic jet flow downstream of a high-aspect ratio rectangular nozzle are simulated. The wall pressures are calculated using Hybrid RANS/LES CFD, where LES models the large-scale turbulence in the shear layers downstream of the nozzle. The structural vibrations are computed using modes from a finite element model and a time-domain forced response calculation methodology. At low flow speeds, the convecting turbulence in the shear layers loads the plate in a manner similar to that of turbulent boundary layer flow. However, at high nozzle pressure ratio discharge conditions the flow over the panel becomes transonic, and the shear layer turbulence scatters from shock cells just downstream of the nozzle, generating backward traveling low frequency surface pressure loads that also drive the plate. The structural mode shapes and subsonic and transonic surface pressure fields are transformed to wavenumber space to better understand the nature of the loading distributions and individual modal responses. Modes with wavenumber distributions which align well with those of the pressure field respond strongly. Negative wavenumber loading components are clearly visible in the transforms of the supersonic flow wall pressures near the nozzle, indicating backward propagating pressure fields. In those cases the modal joint acceptances include significant contributions from negative wavenumber terms.

In many applications like the aircraft or the rockets/missiles, the flow from a nozzle needs to be expanded suddenly in an enlarged duct of larger diameter. The enlarged duct is provided after the nozzle to maximize the thrust created by the flow from the nozzle. When the fluid is suddenly expanded in an enlarged duct, the base pressure is generally lower than the atmospheric pressure, which results in base drag. The objective of this research work is to optimize the length to diameter (L/D) ratio of the enlarged duct using the CFD analysis in the flow field from the supersonic nozzle. The flow from the nozzle drained in an enlarged duct, the thrust, and the base pressure are studied. The Mach numbers for the study were 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5. The nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of the study were 2, 5 and 8. The L/D ratios of the study were 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Based on the results, it is concluded that the L/D ratio should be increased to an optimum value to reattach the flow to an enlarged duct and to increase the thrust. The supersonic suddenly expanded flow field is wave dominant, and the results cannot be generalized. The optimized L/D ratios for various combinations of flow and geometrical parameters are given in the conclusion section.
The effect of the working fluid flow conditions and nozzle geometry on the spray performance of a twin-fluid nozzle used in Selective Catalytic Reduction is investigated experimentally. The liquid pressure is varied in the range of 0.3atm to 1.5atm and the air pressure is varied from the 0.5atm to 3.0atm. relative position between liquid nozzle(internal nozzle) and air nozzle(external nozzle) tip changes front 1mm inside the air nozzle to 1mm outside the air nozzle. The orifice diameter of the air nozzle is varied with 5mm. 6mm and 7mm. Spray visualization is realized with CCD-Camera. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) and mean particle velocities are measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) under various experimental conditions. The measuring point is 300mm away from the nozzle tip in the downstream spray. The experimental results are that spray angle is depended air flow rate because nozzle diameter, air pressure and nozzle tip relative positions are related air flow rate. SMD is depended air flow rate and water flow rate. Also, SMD is increased when water flow rate is bigger. SMD is decreased when Air flow rate is bigger.
Experimental and computational studies were performed to investigate the effectiveness of a thrust vectoring method using a counterflow concept. A shadowgraph method was used to visualize the supersonic jet expanded from a two-dimensional convergent-divergent nozzle and deflected by a now suction. The primary nozzle pressure and suction nozzle pressure ratios are varied between 3.0 and 5.0, and between 0.2 and 1.0 respectively. The present experimental and computational results showed that, for a given primary nozzle pressure ratio, a decrease in the suction nozzle pressure ratio produced an increased thrust vector angle, and during the change processes of the suction pressure, a hysteresis effect of the thrust vectoring was found through the wall pressure distributions.

To investigate pressure distributions on the shaft surface of the air bearing, the commercial CFD software was employed to study three different nozzle geometries to improve the nozzle performance: general drill-shaped, matched cube-shaped and trimmed exit nozzles. Under the influence of stagnation point, the maximum pressure was observed at the center of shaft surface for all cases. Owing to the blocking effect of a fine gap between the shaft surface and the nozzle exit, the drill-shaped nozzle has the rapid local pressure increase near the nozzle exit corner, generating the ring vortex in the radial direction within pressure ratio of 6.92, and its pressure becomes negative in a certain range of downstream. In comparison, the contoured nozzle showed a local pressure increase in the measured range of pressure ratios, but a negative pressure appeared within the pressure ratio of about 10. The trimmed nozzle was seemed to extend the high pressure zone near the stagnation point in the radial direction substantially, and no negative pressure was appeared in the whole range. Based on these observations, it is found that trimming nozzle exit becomes more effective for improving the performance than modifying the nozzle inside contour.
Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum mean pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.

Variable nozzles are used to enhance the effectiveness of aircraft engines at various altitudes. Unsynchronized movements of variable nozzle flaps affect the direction of thrust in case the variable nozzle consists of many flaps. A synchronization test system was developed to verify the synchronization characteristics of variable nozzle mechanism including flaps. The test system has a capability to simulate combustion pressure in variable nozzle space. The test system was used to qualify the synchronization characteristics of a variable nozzle flaps affected by magnitude and uniformity of simulated combustion pressure, and time delay of each nozzle actuators.

In a reflected shock tunnel, stagnation conditions of a nozzle are determined by the flow behind a reflected shock. When calculating the flow behind the reflected shock, unlike a shock tube, the flow leakage through the nozzle is to be considered. The analytical studies were done to find out the characteristics of the stagnation conditions of the nozzle with various nozzle throat size. Experiments and numerical simulations were also carried out for further understanding of the flow leakage effects. It was found that the nozzle stagnation pressure was diminished by the increase of the size of the nozzle throat. It was also found that the steady pressure in the stagnation were maintained well at the area ratio of the driven tube to the nozzle throat is 4.5.

In this study, a numerical study was conducted to characterize the E-D nozzle which changes according to the nozzle pressure ratios. Three different numerical analysis models were designed by changing the pintle inflection angles. When the nozzle pressure ratio is low, the outside air flows into the E-D nozzle to form an open flow field. As the nozzle pressure ratio increases, the flow transition occurs to become the closed flow field where the recirculation region is isolated inside the nozzle. Also, the highest thrust coefficient was obtained in the analytical model with high pintle inflection angle at all nozzle pressure ratios.
Injection technology is one of the important technologies in a diesel engine. Many studies have done on the injection system. In this study, the fuel chamber geometry, the orifice ratio and the needle lift of the injection valve for a marine diesel engine are varied, and simulated. The result shows that the nozzle hole size has influence on the rail pressure and injection duration sensitively. The decrease of the static pressure at the nozzle hole entrance and the increase of the dynamic pressure on the outlet surface are occurred with the increase of the nozzle hole diameter. The highest dynamic pressure of the outlet was occurred at the needle lift of 0.4mm and the nozzle hole diameter of 0.328mm in this test nozzle.
