An inverse fluidized-bed biofilm reactor (IFBBR) was used for the treatment of highly-emulsified oily wastewater. When the concentration of biomass which was cultivated in the synthetic wastewater reached to 6000 mg/1, the oily wastewater was employed to the reactor with a input COD concentration range of 50 mg/1 to 1900 mg/l. Virtually the IFBBR showed a high stability during the long operation period although soma fluctuation was observed. The COD removal efficiency was maintained over 9% under the condition that organic loading rate should be controlled under the value of 1.5 kgCOD/$m^3$/day, and F/M ratio is 1.0 kgCOD/kgVSS/day at $22{\circ}C$ and HRT of 12 hrs. As increasing organic loading rates, the biomass concentration was decreased steadily with decreasing of biofilm dry density rather than biofilm thickness. Based on the experimental jesuits, it was suggested that the decrease in biofilm dry density was caused by a loss of biomass inside the biofilm.
Biofilm is a structured community of microorganism encapsulated within a self-developed polymeric matrix and adherent to a living or a solid surface. In this study, we investigated the effects of various substrates on the formation of biofilm in Vibrio parahaemolyticus. We found that biofilm formation profoundly increased in a substrate, that consisted of calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, and calcium sulfate in 1% peptone water. On the other hand, a dramatic reduction in biofilm formation was observed in a substrate, that consisted of glucose and ferric chloride in LB broth. These results suggest that V. parahaemolyticus prefer to form a biofilm on the surface of a crustacean or a clam, where calcium ion is rich, and also where seawater temperature is relatively lower. In contrast, high levels of glucose in a crustacean or a clam body resulting from increased seawater temperature, can make V. parahaemolyticus detach from it and lead to free floating.
The objective of this study is to review the basic theories related substrate removal in wastewater flow variations using submerged biofilm reactor. An aerated biofilm reactor is that in which influent organic substrates are aerobically oxidized by the microorganisms of biofilm grown on the surface of submerged media. No sludge is returned, and oxygen is supplied by diffusers. Three types of aerated biofilm reactor are one stage-central aeration, one stageup flow aeration and two stage-side aeration. The orders of substrate removal capacity in wastewater flow variations showed two stage-side aeration, one stage-upflow aeration and one stage-central aeration. The phenonmenon of nonclosing volid in upflow aeration type was superior to these in central-side aeration type. Attached biofilm masses in case of upflow, side and central aeration reactor were 1.0mg/cm$^2$, 4.1 mg/cm$^2$ and 0.93 mg/cm$^2$, respectively. Yield coefficient for biofilm was 0.31 to 0.48. Especially, removal efficiency can be increased remarkably according to the number of biofilm reactor and the packed condition of media.
A number of bacterial species coexist in oral cavities as a biofilm rather than a planktonic arrangement. By forming an oral biofilm with quorum sensing properties, microorganisms can develop a higher pathogenic potential and stronger resistance to the host immune system and antibiotics. Hence, the inhibition of biofilm formation has become a major research issue for the future prevention and treatment of oral diseases. In this study, we investigated the effects of pentose on biofilm formation and phenotypic changes using wild type oral bacteria obtained from healthy human saliva. D-ribose and D-arabinose were found to inhibit biofilm formation, but have no effects on the growth of each oral bacterium tested. Pentoses may thus be good candidate biofilm inhibitors without growth-inhibition activity and be employed for the future prevention or treatment of oral diseases.
This study was conducted in order to evaluate the treatment efficiencies of anaerobic packed and fluidized-bed biofilm and to investigate applicability in treating livestock wastewater. Biocarbonate alkalinity(BA) and volatile fatty acid(VFA) were about 3,230-3,270 mg/l, 3,790-3,126 mg/l(as CaCO$_3$) and 224-402 mg/l, 141-387 mg/l(as CH$_3$COOH), and VFA/BA ratio was about 0.069~0.12, 0.045-0.12 in packed and fluidized-bed biofilm. When COD loading rate was 6.0 kg COD/$m^3\cdot$ day in packed and fluidized-bed biofilm, methane gas production were 3.23 l/day and 4.38 l/day, respectively. In the same COD loading rate, methane gas production volumes per kg COD removal were 0.25 m$^3$ CH$_4$/kg COD$_{rm}$ and $0.28 m^3 CH_4/kg COD^{rm}$, respectively. At this time, it could be estimated that fluidized-bed biofilm was more high. In case of HRT 0.94 day(6.0 kg COD/$m^3\cdot$ day) and 11 day(0.5 kg COD/$m^3\cdot$ day), packed-bed biofilm showed 59% and 81% COD removal efficiency, respectively. While fluidized-bed biofilm showed 72% and 85% removal efficiency, respectively. It was showed that fluidized-bed biofilm was more efficient. Packed-bed biofilm was higher than fluidized in treatment efficiencies of organic matters, but required continuous treatment using combined system, because it was very exceeded over an environmental standard solidified from '96 year. In operating fluidized-bed biofilm, if farm house consider high power cost according to high circulation ratio in an economic point of view, it would have an effect that farm house use packed-bed biofilm as combined system in treating livestock wastewater.
The present study examined the physical properties of biofilms manufactured from yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares skin gelatin with the aim of developing a biofilm from fisheries by-products to replace mammalian sources. The physical properties of biofilms from yellowfin tuna gelatin were compared with those of biofilms from porcine gelatin. The yellowfin tuna gelatin biofilm exhibited higher tensile strength (69.08 MPa) and greater elongation (14.32%) than did porcine gelatin biofilm (50.50 MPa and 10.21%, respectively). The ${\Delta}E$ and YI (yellowness index) Huntercolor values of yellowfin tuna gelatin biofilm were three-fold and 15-fold higher, respectively, than values for porcine gelatin biofilm. The opacity value of yellowfin tuna gelatin biofilm was higher than that of porcine gelatin biofilm. The stability against water of yellowfin tuna gelatin biofilm was lower than that of porcine gelatin biofilm at pH 3 to pH 11. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the thermal stability of the biofilms was about $270^{\circ}C$ for porcine gelatin biofilm and about $250^{\circ}C$ for yellowfin tuna gelatin biofilm.

This study was performed for minimization of excessive biofilm effects at the high strength organic wastewater treatment. As a results of biofilm attachment experiment using piggery wastewater, aggravation of water quality due to excessive biofilm showed after 15 days of operating times.4 excessive biofilm phase, the equivalent biofilm thickness and VSS contents per unit aura were observed in the range of 1,100 to $1,200{\mu}m$ and 2.5 to 3.0mg $VSS/cm^{2}$, respectively. In the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor/anoxic fixed biofilm reactor(AFBR/ANFBR) process with endogenous respiration phase, the BOD removal efficiency was obtained more than 90 percentage at the surface loading rate and volumetric loading rate of the AFBR maintained less than 17 g $BOD/m^{2}{\cdot}$day and 1.7kg $BOD/m^{3}{\cdot}$day, respectively. The removal efficiency of TKN and $NH_{3}$-N at the loading rates below 5.60g $NH_{3}-N/m^{2}{\cdot}day$ and 0.56kg $NH_{3}-N/m^{3}{\cdot}$day were above 76 percentage and 82 percentage, respectively. In order to reduced sludge production rate and aggravation of water quality, endogenous respiration phase was accepted at first AFBR reactor. As a results of this operating condition, sludge production was minimized and removal efficiency was maintained stability.

In this study, the dynamics of living cells (LC) and dead cells (DC) in a laboratory-scale biofilm membrane bioreactor for waste gas treatment was examined. Toluene was used as a model pollutant. The bacterial cells were enumerated as fluoromicroscopic counts during a 140 operating day period using BacLight nucleic acid staining in combination with epifluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CSLM). Overall, five different phases could be distinguished during the biofilm development: (A) cell attachment, (B) pollutant limitation, (C) biofilm establishment and colonization, (D) colonized biofilm, and (E) biofilm erosion. The bioreactor was operated under different conditions by applying different pollutant concentrations. An optimum toluene removal of 89% was observed at a loading rate of 14.4 kg $m^{-3}d^{-1}$. A direct correlation between the biodegradation rate of the reactor and the dynamics of biofilm development could be demonstrated. This study shows the first description of biofilm development during gaseous toluene degradation in MBR.
