Korea has a dark age in terms of culture in the last 20th century. Korea had been struggling between the Great Powers of the world in the imperialism and had sacrifice to keep our own culture itself. Japanese imperialist's a invasion, culture liquidation by Japan, Independence from Japan, Korean war and Influence by US are major bitter historical affair after close of Chosun Dynasty in the process of modernization. Therefore Korea couldn't stay in the center of world cultural core parts and was degraded as cultural consumption country which was provided oversea culture by other countries. Then Korea couldn't develop our unique traditional idea and culture. In the meantime there are both extreme phenomena; one is expulsion of other cultures absolutely and the other is only following western culture unconditionally like trimming policy in the end of colony age. These discreet and unfiltered western culture had been influenced Korea culture over the wide range strongly and resulted in cultural colony situation to produce western imitation culture without philosophy and traditional spirit. Even though Korea has met opportunity in the culture, we called "Han Trend", no formation of own culture is main reason for psychological panic. Korea furniture design is one of parts of lost of tradition culture and typical parts in reproducing western imitation culture. As a result furniture industry's major reason for loss value as exporting industry compared to other industries result in most of the furniture products without our unique identity. This situation become more deepen unfortunately. This report would like to suggest the direction of design with global competition capability and cultural identity to boost Korean furniture design industry by comparing, analyzing and speculating between design of Chosun dynasty and philosophy of modernism in western.

The influences of coating on oak veneer overlaid Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) were evaluated. The hardness of 9mm-MDF by hardness test were increased about 28% with coating on MDF and the more increased hardness of 31% with oak veneer overlaid MDF. The hardness of veneer overlaid MDF increased with increment of the veneer thickness and that of overlaid MDF showed the higher hardness compared to non-overlaid MDF. The optimum moisture content in terms of the hardness of panels MDF was in the range of 7% to 10% and the hardness was decreased with increasing of the moisture content. Any cracks were not overlaid coated on the MDF but the cracks were observed on the overlaid MDF after Soak under Vacuum Dry 10-cycle. The thicker veneer-overlaid MDF showed more cracks.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of number and location of finger joints on the bending strength of glue-laminated lumbers. Urea resin adhesives were used in this experiment and the resin content was 70% for cold pressing. The lamina were edge-jointed and end-jointed. The specimen were composed of one or three layers. The obtained results are summarized as follows; The effects of finger joints on the decrease of bending strength of glue laminated woods were different according to the number and location of finger joints. The decrease of MOR was highest on the middle position of laminated woods. The effects of several arrangements of finger joints on the bending strength of glue laminated woods showed on Figure 7 and 8. The variance of thickness-laminating on the bending strength of glue laminated woods were larger than those of width-laminating.

The most important issue of today in design genre is the comprehensive design that overcomes the limitations of the rational and logical designs of functionalism that has had influences in entire 20th century and encompasses even the emotional aspect of humans. The emotional design factors in furniture designs will be analyzed in order to analyze their effects and values on the consumers of present times. The emotional uses of the patterns with the motive of nature expressing papers, flowers, wood textures, natural phenomena etc as they are and the colors with the vivid feeling of primary colors represent more dynamic and cheerful life style and the designs are characterized by the warm primary colors that give the feeling that the nature has been transferred to the designs as it is. Diverse materials such as leather, fur, fabric and the materials with soft and flexible feeling such as silicone material have been used more widely and they are used as the materials expressing freedom not being formalized. The designs that can produce diverse spaces desired by users by gathering unit modules can be said to be the outcome of the emotional designs combined with the needs of modern peoples that aspire their own designs.

This study was carried out to investigate the wood properties for efficient utilization of warm temperate tree species of Quercus acuta Thunb. grown in Korea. Fundamental wood properties in the anatomical, physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics were examined. Quercus acuta Thunb. is a radial-porous, straight grained and fine textured wood. The heartwood is not clearly distinguished from the sapwood. In physical properties, it has a high oven-dry specific gravity of $0.85{\pm}0.02$, and high shrinkage from green to air-dried condition of $7.05{\pm}0.52%$ in radial and $11.13{\pm}0.48%$ in tangential direction. Mechanical properties determined are strong with the MOR of $1,065{\pm}90kgf/cm^2$, and tensile strength parallel to grain of $1,490{\pm}258kgf/cm^2$ and shear strength of $175{\pm}13kgf/cm^2$. Also, this wood has high extractive contents: 11.11% for cold and 13.51% for hot water.

As the machinery-centered mechanism has been changing into human-entered digitalization and urbanization, industrial and social structures gradually become softer. Also in design, with the growing success in solving technological problems, a new dimensional concept is demanded, along with the expanded scope of design application. For the purpose of developing a furniture design contributing to better human life, the study aims to sufficiently examine senses and psychological conditions of human beings and explore the design practically meeting consumer's desires. It is necessary to systemize and establish the study on human senses as one of the scientific fields in the near future and work together with experts from a wide range of areas, by reflecting the outcomes of studies on furniture design. In addition, it is expected that exploration of sensible furniture meeting consumer's demands and effective understanding resulted problems will help such design applied to sociability and humanity problems in a reasonable manner as a sensible design.

As exchange and cooperation have increased in each country or region and a variety of NGOs are getting increasingly active in the 21st century, environments for the industry of international conventions have continued to improve. However, since the industry is in the starting stage, facilities for international conventions and professional management personnel are deficient. In this study, furniture design that shows the cultural identity of Korea from the invention facilities is focused and efforts are made in order to make the shape that has functionality and meaning based on the analysis of space. Participants of diverse nationalities, who use international convention facilities, feel Korea through furniture and remember its image; thus, this study focuses on the furniture design that has the identity of Korea. The concept of furniture design has been derived based on the traditional aesthetic consciousness in the symbolic, cultural, and emotional light. The identity of design does not depend on the partial characteristics of the traditional society but modernity and internationality shall coexist along with traditionality. Modernity and globalism are reflected along with the traditional elements in furniture.

Rattan furniture is strips of cane around the frame that consists of wisteria, bamboo and wood. The materials are originally from Southeast Asia, and the material of domestic Rattan goods is Korean wisteria. Rattan, which is strong and elastic, is often used for craft materials, and it also retains the original feel of the material with great touch. It is beautiful and suitable for expressing curves. It is shiny, light in weight, easy for cleaning and ventilation. Rattan furniture is unique product made by human hands and nature and is an environment friendly well-being furniture. The use examples of these domestic rattan furnitures is condensed as below. First, the materials of rattan product is wisteria, rice straw, bush clover wood, reed and bamboo. Second, the use of rattan product which is made of domestic wisteria is limited to farming equipments and living wares. Third, the materials of rattan furniture differs in domestic made and foreign made product. As is the characteristics of timbers growing in warmer climates of Korea, it has many twist and strong and it is not straight in length so it is hard to manufacture into and use as furniture also it is hard to acquire right size for the material.
